For the long run, WordPress is usually the safer choice for a business, and Wix is the better choice for speed and simplicity now.

The deciding factor is ownership. With WordPress you hold the files and the database, so you can change hosting, change developer or move the site anywhere. With Wix you are renting a platform: if you leave, the site does not come with you.

Choose Wix if you need something live this month, will edit it yourself, and the site is a brochure.

Choose WordPress if the site is a business asset you expect to grow for five years, or if SEO is central to how you get customers.

There is no consensus "best", because the honest answer splits by use case:

• Squarespace — best design quality out of the box; favoured for portfolios, restaurants and studios.
• Wix — most flexible editor and the widest app market; best for non-technical owners who want control over layout.
• Shopify — the default if selling products is the main purpose.
• WordPress — best long-term SEO ceiling and the only one where you fully own the result.

What experts agree on more than the ranking: the builder matters less than the content and the local SEO work. A well-run Squarespace site beats a neglected WordPress one every time.

WordPress has the higher SEO ceiling; Wix has a perfectly adequate SEO floor.

Wix closed most of the historic gap — it now handles titles, meta descriptions, structured data, sitemaps and redirects properly, and its sites can rank well. What it still limits is deep technical control: page speed optimisation, custom structured data, advanced redirect rules and server-level configuration.

For a local business competing on a handful of local searches, that ceiling never gets reached and Wix is fine. For a site competing nationally on commercial terms, or one that needs to be cited by AI engines, WordPress or custom code gives you room that Wix does not.

For most small businesses in 2026 the practical default is WordPress with a well-chosen theme, because it balances cost, control and SEO headroom without locking you in.

The case for the alternatives is narrower but real: Squarespace if design matters more than flexibility and you will never hire a developer; Shopify if you sell products; Webflow if you want design freedom and are comfortable with a steeper learning curve.

The choice people regret most is picking a builder because it was cheapest to start, then discovering two years in that the site cannot do what the business now needs and nothing is portable.

Be careful where you read this: most "Wix vs WordPress" articles are published by companies that earn a commission on one of them. Affiliate payouts for hosting are large, which is why so many comparisons reach the same conclusion.

For a genuinely objective view:

• Compare the two on your requirements, written down first, rather than on a generic feature table.
• Test both free trials with your own content for an afternoon.
• Check the export path for each before you commit — that single question separates the platforms more than any feature.

And treat any comparison that does not mention what happens when you leave as incomplete.

Four that hold up in practice:

• You own it. Files and database are yours. You can move host, hire anyone, or export everything.
• No ceiling. Anything technically possible on the web is possible on WordPress, because you control the server and the code.
• Cost at scale. Wix's monthly fee is fixed forever; WordPress hosting starts cheaper and does not rise with your success.
• Ecosystem. Any developer, anywhere, can work on it — you are never dependent on one platform's roadmap.

The honest counterweight: WordPress needs maintenance. Updates, backups and security are your responsibility, and ignoring them is how WordPress sites get hacked.

Rank them in this order and the decision usually makes itself:

1. Exit path. Can you export the site and go elsewhere? Everything else is reversible; this is not.
2. SEO control. Titles, structured data, redirects, page speed, clean URLs.
3. Total cost over three years, including the plan, apps and transaction fees — not the launch price.
4. Who edits it day to day, and whether that person can actually use the editor.
5. Functionality you need in year two, not just year one.
6. Design flexibility, which most comparisons put first and which matters least.

If two options tie, pick the one more people know how to work on.
